Kailua Kona, Hawaii. City and Business guide.

Welcome to Kailua Kona, Hawaii.

Kailua, Kona is the center of commerce and of the tourist industry on West Hawaii. It is famous in the sports world as the site of the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. The town's post office is designated Kailua-Kona to differentiate it from the larger, Kailua located on windward O'ahu, although it is referred to as "Kona" in everyday speech. Many place names in the Hawaiian Islands are repeated on several islands, but the two Kailuas are the only confusing conflict in this regard. As of the 2000 Census, the town had a population of 9,870. The city is served by Kona International Airport.

Kailua-Kona is the heart of North Kona, by far the most developed area in the district. Its Ali'i Drive is lined with shops, hotels, and condos, but for the most part the shoreline vista remains intact because most of the buildings are low-rise.

The Sadie Seymour Botanical Gardens (1.5 acres) are nonprofit botanical gardens located on the grounds of the Kona Outdoor Circle Educational Center at 76-6280 Kuakini Highway, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii (island), Hawaii. They are open daily; admission is free. The gardens were designed by landscape architect Scott Seymour on a wedge-shaped plot, and named in honor of his mother. They feature the cultivated plants of Hawai'i, arranged in 11 tiers by geographic origin. The first tier contains native Hawai'ian plants.

Kona Coast State Park - Sandy beach and dunes, picnic area with tables and portable toilets. A 4.5-mile hike North through this wilderness park on the historic Ala Kahakai coastal trail leads to Kua Bay. Midway, a hike to the summit of Pu'u Ku'ili, a 342-foot high cinder cone, offers a coastline view. Dry and hot with no drinking water.

White Sands Beach Park - This small beach is unique because the sand disappears and re-appears, depending on the water and surf conditions. This spot is used for body boarding, body surfing and swimming when the sand is in and the waves aren't too big. Showers and portable restroom. Located a few miles out of Kailua-Kona along the ocean on Alii Drive.

Kahaluu Beach - One of the best snorkeling spots in the world. This black sand beach is used for snorkeling and swimming. The bay is protected by an outer reef and rock formation. This beach is very popular and is ideal for snorkeling with calm waters and vast ocean life. Lifeguards may be on duty. Showers and restrooms. Located on Alii Drive about 3 miles South of Kailua-Kona.
